Frontieres: The Fantasia International Co-Production Market

In its inaugural 2012 edition, Frontières presented 14 projects, as well as 10 Off-Frontières projects, ailing from Quebec and Canada, the USA, Mexico, France, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Once again, Frontières will curate a dozen standout genre film projects by filmmakers hailing from Canada, Europe, Australasia and the United States. These projects will be featured in the co-production market, where the attached filmmakers and producers will be given a chance to meet with international producers, sales agents and distributors looking for projects to get involved with.

The Off-Frontières section will also make its return, to highlight a limited number of additional projects in a wider range of development stages. This selection should also allow for the inclusion of more Quebecois and Canadian projects, although international projects are also welcome.

To participate in Frontières, the selected projects would have to be market premieres with a completed script and would need to be applicable to an international co-production environment where there would ideally be a Canadian production element (either in terms of production location, cast or crew, or post-production). It would have a domestic producer attached, although some exceptions could be made for experienced directors looking to find a new producer. The Off-Frontières selection allows for the inclusion of projects that do not fit all of these guidelines.

The market is open to both seasoned directors and directors proposing their first feature film project. The directors should be residents of either Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand or a European country.

To apply, the following documents would need to be submitted:

  • Screenplay
  • Long (2 pages) and short (200 words) Synopsis.
  • Long (1 page) and short (100 words) Director’s Statement.
  • Propositions on how the project could work in an international co-production environment with a Canadian production element.
  • Basic production budget estimate.
  • Director, Writer and Producer Bio (as applicable).
  • Private Vimeo link to previous feature or short film work.

Please submit these documents in one zip file bearing the name of the project to Stephanie Trepanier, Market Director, at stephanie@fantasiafestival.com.

The deadline for application is March 26, 2013, but it would be appreciated that projects be sent well before this date. The selected projects will be announced early May 2013.

The Frontières Participants

Beside the Directors, Screenwriters and Producers of the selected projects, we invite Producers looking for distinctive new projects to become involved with, Sales Agents looking for promising projects to pre-sell, Distributors looking to attach themselves early-on to projects, and Agents looking for new talent to represent to actively participate in the market.

Please notify us of your interest in participating in the market early-on. The accreditations deadline to be included in the Fantasia Industry Rendez-Vous Market Guide is June 14th.
