The Art of Producing Special Edition Video Releases for Cherished Cinema Classics
If you love cinema like we do, chances are that you’ve got a number of deluxe special edition blu-rays, DVDs or maybe even laserdiscs in your home. The best of these are often the results of passion-driven endeavours on behalf of cinephile disc producers that can take years to make happen. Join us for a sure-to-be-fascinating hour with three of the most accomplished producers in their fields as they discuss the trials, tribulations and victories of producing definitive special editions.
Charles de Lauzirika has produced nearly every Ridley Scott S.E. over the years, including the restoration of BLADE RUNNER and its extensive fivedisc set. Among his many other triumphs are the Twin Peaks 10-disc Gold box and the reassembly of David Fincher’s original cut of ALIEN 3. He has worked on films from everyone from the Coen Brothers and Sam Raimi to Michael Bay and Peter Hyams. His feature directorial debut CRAVE is having its world premiere at Fantasia this year.
Marc Walkow has produced discs for the Criterion Collection (including VIDEODROME, HOUSE, and JIGOKU), started the EuroShock and Mario Bava lines at Image, produced the OKATSU trilogy for Synapse films and several Koji Wakamatsu titles for the American Cinematheque collection, among many others. He was also a core programmer at the New York Asian Film Festival for many years and has worked extensively with Sushi Typhoon.
David Gregory is CEO of Severin Films, whose releases include definitive restorations of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s SANTA SANGRE, Richard Stanley’s HARDWARE and Richard Rush’s THE STUNT MAN. Gregory was there at the inception of Blue Underground and the heyday of Anchor Bay, and has produced discs for everyone from BFI, MGM, Warner, MPI, Criterion, Second Sight and Arrow, working with such greats as Roman Polanski, Michael Cimino, Jess Franco, Nicholas Roeg, William Friedkin, Dario Argento, John Milius, Kathryn Bigelow and Bob Clark. He is also a filmmaker in his own right (THE THEATRE BIZARRE, PLAGUE TOWN).
Panel will be moderated by Travis Crawford (Film Comment).
