Snuff Movies : une histoire de la violence
For a third consecutive year, Festival Fantasia joins forces with the academic colloquium OFF-CIEL to present a conference on popular culture. Since its initial appearance in the 1970s, the myth of the snuff film is still as terrifying as it is credible. While never looking to confirm or deny the existence of such a horrible concept, Simon Laperrière, co-creator of SNUFF MOVIES: NAISSANCE D’UNE LÉGENDE URBAINE and director of Fantasia’ s Camera Lucida section, explores the evolution of this nightmarish rumour through an analysis of the audiovisual material, from stags to Web-based mondo movies, that helped certify it. A story about the kind of violence, to use Cronenberg’s words, that fascinates as much as it defines our perception of modern media.
Conference precedes the screening of THE KILLING OF AMERICA and the book launch of SNUFF MOVIE: NAISSANCE D’UNE LÉGENDE URBAINE by Antonio Dominguez Leiva and Simon Laperrière. (Presented in French)
