A couple on fragile ground. A tragic accident. A ghost returns, almost comically, under a bedsheet. But the story that follows is anything but funny: a deceased husband (Casey Affleck) returns to his family’s suburban home, trying to connect with his heartbroken widow (Rooney Mara). Tragically, however, he increasingly becomes unmoored from his post-existence. Life passed him by once, and now, he is bound to experience the passing of time over and over... Memories of the good and the bad times flood his consciousness – will he ever reach through to the other side? Is this even the afterlife?
David Lowery reunites with both AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINT stars Rooney Mara (CAROL, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO) and Casey Affleck (MANCHESTER BY THE SEA) for a deeply personal project, shot on the heels of the Disney behemoth PETE’S DRAGON, yet no less fantastical and ambitious; a film both intimate (in scale) and cosmic (in scope) that should leave you profoundly shaken. Confronting notions of mortality, and humanity’s need to believe in the beyond, Lowery’s latest unfolds like an inspired hybrid of Spanish bedsheet-ghost curio FINISTERRAE and Terrence Malick’s THE TREE OF LIFE, attempting nothing less than a metaphysical exploration of love, longing, and legacy, across the vastness of space and epochs. Beautifully designed – and shot on celluloid, no less! – here’s a peculiar work of art that must be experienced rather than described, signaling Lowery’s versatility as a director, and his commitment to pushing his style ever-forward… towards infinity.
